Advanced Open Water

Who Should Take This Course?

As a certified open water diver, you've discovered that diving is an adventure - the door to an amazing world with unique sights, sounds, and sensations.  But, its actually many adventures and experiences, and that's what the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is all about:  expanding your underwater world by making dives in the pursuit of new discoveries, abilities, and experiences.  It's about new skills that make diving more rewarding, and opening new activities and options when you go underwater.  It's about exploring dive sites you've not seen before, gaining experience with dive gear, and understanding more about how you see, feel, and hear in the underwater world.

And, its about becoming something more. You learn how to think more like an experienced diver, which builds your abilities, skills, and confidence. You learn more about yourself - where your interests lie so you can get more out of diving. Do you have a passion for creating underwater images? Recovering what someone lost? Mastering new technologies?  Probing shipwrecks? Whether you're a newly certified PADI Open Water Diver or have been one for years, the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver program develops the underwater interests you have, while you discover new ones, expand and refine your skills, and become more confident.

What Will You Learn?

In the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver program, you will learn by diving.  Predive briefings, the manual, and Knowledge Reviews cover what you need to know for most of the Adventures Dives.  There are no written exams; instead your instructor will evaluate your learning by asking questions, having discussions, and watching you put into practice what you know.

With your instructor, you'll choose the Adventure Dives you want to experience and learn from. Each builds your abilities, confidence, and thinking skills while focusing on a diving specialty. All Advanced Open Water Divers are required to choose Deep Diving and Underwater Navigation for two of their Adventure Dives. The remaining three dives are entirely up to the student. Here's a list of the possibilities:

  • Boat Diving

  • Deep Diving

  • Digital Underwater Imaging

  • Drift Diver

  • Fish Identification

  • Night Diving

  • Peak Performance Buoyancy

  • Search & Recovery

  • Underwater Naturalist

  • Underwater Navigation

  • Wreck Diving

  • Diver Propulsion Vehicle Diving

  • Enriched Air Diving

  • Full Face Mask Diving

What SCUBA Gear Will You Use?

In the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course, you will use basic scuba gear, including a mask, snorkel, fins, regulator, buoyancy control device and a tank. The equipment you wear varies, depending upon whether you’re diving in tropical, temperate or cold water.

Each Advanced Open Water Diver student will need their own personal mask, snorkel, and fins because proper fit is important for these personal pieces of equipment. Buying a personal buoyancy control device (BCD) and regulator also has significant advantages and we're more than happy to make recomendations as well as use our industry connections to purchase items for you at a discounted price. If you're not quite ready to make that investment we have excellent gear that students may use while taking PADI courses.

What's the Cost?

Advanced Open Water Diving Course - This course has a wide variety of possible dives and where we plan to complete this training depends on what Adventure Dives interest you most.  The certification can be earned for as little $175.
